So my husband and I love our bikes and love riding them. Therefore taking trips that the kids will enjoy and where we can ride our bikes makes us very happy campers. We decided our family vacation would be at Jekyll Island, GA again this year. We planned on parking our car and riding our bike everywhere for the 3 weeks that we are here. On about the third day here my bike got a flat. While annoying I always keep a spare tube with me. My husband changed my flat and off we went. The next night we had just headed out with my daughter in the trailer behind me and my son on the trail-a-bike behind my husband.
The trail-a-bike had a big malfunction lost connection to my husband’s bike. Can I tell you as a mom watching this action seemed like it was happening in slow motion. I watched as my 5-year-old went flying through the air and something on my husband’s bike flying off. My next worry came in the fact that since I was riding right behind them and my husband went flying one way and my son went the other that I was bound to run over one of them. Since I’m pulling a bike trailer I can’t stop on a dime. Somehow I managed to miss both of them.
I ran over to my son who unbelievably only had a tiny scratch on his ankle. I tell you that boy is going to have a career as a stuntman or in bmx. He can fall off his bike like a pro and often does on purpose. We next looked at my husband’s bike and about 10 spokes were broken or bent thanks to the trail-a-bike hitting it.
My husband decided to put his bike aside and just rent a bike. That morning after he rented the bike we were riding to the beach my tire had another blow out flat. Crazy! So we decided to take both bikes in and have them fixed. It was discovered that my outer tire had a hole and the tube kept getting pinched. What was irritating is that I had just taken my bike in for a tune-up so it would be ready for this trip. This should have been caught by them but was somehow missed.
Finally by the 5th day of our trip we are able to ride again as a family on the beautiful Jekyll Island, GA. As we rode through the Spanish Moss I could feel myself start to decompress and relax. My soul seemed to be settled and I could breathe a sigh of relief. It’s a wonderful feeling to be out in nature and enjoy time with my family.
Here is a short video showing the beautiful trail we are riding.
