I was given the opportunity to review the Mazda 3 with SkyActiv Technology. Here’s how I understand Skyactiv Technology. They improved fuel economy by making the engines smarter and the car body’ lighter – like 220lbs lighter. The engine is smarter because it knows the perfect moment to shift for optimum fuel economy. On average it get’s 15% better fuel economy.
I certainly experienced the better fuel economy. I have a 9.5 year old Jeep Liberty and go visit my Grandfather monthly. He lives 300 miles away round trip. I normally have to fill up right before the kids and I take off and then again before I leave his city so that I can make it back on something other than fumes. I didn’t have that problem with the Mazda 3. They delivered the car to me and off the kids and I went on our trip. We made it there and back and still had over half a tank left. That weekend we drove up to the mountains and back and then around town and I still had 2 bars left when they came to pick up the car! How awesome is that? I was very excited. Talk about the money you would save with this type of fuel economy. WOW!
On the way to my Grandfather’s it rained the majority of the time. I discovered one of my favorite and coolest features about this car thanks to that rain. The windshield wipers automatically adjust to the speed of the rain! So when it was raining super hard the wipers took off and then eased back when the rain slowed down. When we got back from our trip I was so thrilled with this feature that I told my husband all about it. He did laugh a bit at me but I still think that’s very neat. Anything that helps keep my hands on the wheel more is super in my book.
Another very cool feature that this Mazda 3 had was its blind spot monitoring. When you put your blinker on it will beep at you if there is a car in your blind spot and all shows a little picture of a car in your way in the passenger side mirror. I love that! I try to be a safe passers but anything to assist me with that is A+ in my book.
I found that the trunk had a surprising amount of storage space. We were able to pack my big suitcase, their toy bag and my food bag for the trip to my Grandfather’s and still had a ton of room. It was very spacious.
This particular car had leather seats which I loved! I so want leather for my next car. I’ve been without it for alot of years and have missed it. The inside of the car was very comfortable and convenient. They put alot of controls on your steering wheel including bluetooth, cruise and your navigation controls. The rest of the controls are very close and accessible. It was like it was designed for women.
The car’s other features included heated seats, satellite/fm/am radio and a CD player. It had a ton of cup holders. Each door had a cup holder, the middle console between the front seats had 2 cup holders and the back seat had a pull down cup holder that fit nicely between the kiddos carseats.
Speaking of carseats my kids had plenty of room in the backseat. My daughter is still in the massive Britax carseat and my son has a booster seat. They thought the ride was comfortable and roomy. My poor son didn’t want them to take the new car back.
Overall I really liked this car. If you’re looking for a nice 4 door sedan this would be an excellent choice. It’s starting price is $15,200 and the Skyactiv gets 28 mpg city and 40 mpg highway. Very nice!
Here is a video I took of the car. It has some background noise, which was the air conditioner, that I didn’t notice at the time of the filming. I had it going full blast because I live in the south and it was over 90 degrees outside.
